Herping in Central America : A Photo Essay

In by 2 Comments

Filled with dense jungles, miles of coastline, and even a few deserts, Central America is certainly not lacking in excellent herp habitat. The best way to witness these somewhat elusive creatures is by hiking through the forest with your eyes on the trails edges or by driving in rural areas at night, keeping an eye out for anything crossing the road. Another good option is to take a tour in any park with a knowledgable guide.

Never try to catch or disturb an animal you know nothing about. Especially snakes. Always keep in mind that these are wild animals and that they could be venomous. If you’re unsure whether an animal is venomous or not or if you are untrained in safe handling of the animal, simply admire it and continue onward. This should be common sense, but I’ve seen too many curious travelers push their boundaries with wildlife and get hurt in the process.

And on that note, enjoy this photo essay of the reptiles and amphibians that friends and I have encountered while backpacking through Central America!

Have you ever been herping in Central America and witnessed any of these?
